Haldi doodh – golden turmeric milk – is a comfort drink in countless Indian homes, especially on cool evenings. This version is sweetened the traditional way with KuMa Pure & Natural Jaggery Powder instead of refined sugar, and gets its warm golden colour from KuMa Premium Turmeric Powder.
Ready in 7 minServes 2No refined sugar
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk (dairy or any plant milk)
- ½ tsp KuMa Premium Turmeric Powder
- A pinch of black pepper
- ¼ tsp dry ginger powder (saunth) or 3–4 thin slices of fresh ginger
- A pinch of cardamom powder
- 2 tsp KuMa Pure & Natural Jaggery Powder, or to taste
Method
- Pour the milk into a saucepan and add the turmeric, black pepper, ginger and cardamom.
- Bring to a gentle boil, then simmer on low for 3–4 minutes, stirring so the turmeric does not settle.
- Switch off the heat and let the milk rest for a minute.
- Stir in the jaggery powder until dissolved. Adding jaggery off the heat helps stop the milk from splitting.
- Strain if you used fresh ginger, pour into cups and serve warm.
Make it your own
- Richer: add a teaspoon of ghee or a few crushed almonds.
- For kids: skip the pepper and add a little extra jaggery.
- Cosy spice blend: add a small stick of cinnamon while simmering.
Tip: turmeric stains easily, so rinse your pan and cups soon after using them.
